Event description
The role of rising powers has been growing in world politics. The increasing geopolitical competition opens a window for these countries to boost their activeness in multilateral affairs. However, their impact on the international peace and security architecture is still to be evaluated, and the extent to which the global governance system mirrors their views remains questioned.
The paper to be discussed will aim to assess the impact of rising power by analysing their influence on re-conceptualising ‘sovereignty’ as one of the founding principles of the modern political system and as a key factor in determining the nature of peacebuilding.
The analysis will focus on the conceptualisations of sovereignty by three regional rising powers - Brazil, South Africa, and Turkey - and compare them to how the permanent members (P5) of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) define sovereignty.
Bilal Salayme, Dr. Sara Hellmüller and Fanny Badache will be presenting their paper during this seminar.
about the seminars
Each semester, CCDP hosts a series of internal seminars to give our faculty, staff and affiliates the opportunity to present their work and receive feedback. The goal of the seminars is to have an informal and frank conversation about the paper presented, and exchange ideas across disciplines and expertise, going beyond academic silos. Speakers at the seminars are both early career and senior scholars.
Augusta Nannerini and Zach Jambo are organising the seminars for the academic year 2021-2022. For further information, get in touch at augusta.nannerini@graduateinstitute.ch or zachariah.jambo@graduateinstitute.ch.
