The study of emotions has a rich history in disciplines including psychology, neuroscience, sociology, philosophy, and more recently international relations and domestic law. Law, including international law, is presumed to be based on reasoned judgments, and lawyers generally seek to exclude emotions from law. Most people would, however, agree that emotions do influence international law. I suggest that understanding the emotional dimensions can enable international law as a field to better adapt to the complex global and societal issues it purports to address, including but not limited to: global health threats, migration, food safety issues, climate change.
