Drug Policies and Development: Lessons from Practitioners

, -
Add to Calendar

International drug control mechanisms focus on the elimination of the production, use, and trafficking of drugs, through the implementation of public policies criminalizing these substances and their non-medical use. The implementation of these policies has had and still has a negative impact on other global development goals, as stated by the United Nations in 2008 and recognized as “unintended consequences” of drug control.

Linking to the programmes at the intersection of drug policy and development funded by the Geneva Canton in Latin America and elsewhere, this event will provide an opportunity to link researchers and practitioners, and experts in the field, on alternative development and social policies.

Moderator:

  • Christophe Gironde, Deputy Editor-in-Chief International Development Policy journal, Graduate Institute Geneva

Speakers:

  • Ms. Maria Jesus Alonso Lormand, the Director of the International Solidarity Service of the Canton of Geneva, Switzerland
  • Dr. Khalid Tinasti, Director of the Global Commission on Drug Policy (GCDP) and Research and Teaching Fellow at the Global Studies Institute at the University of Geneva, Switzerland
  • Mr. Luis Javier Zubieta Herrera, Manager of the HELVETAS Economic Development and Inclusive Entrepreneurship SubProgram, and Director of the Swiss Development Cooperation's "Integrated Water Management" Project, Switzerland
  • Prof. Julia Buxton, British Academy Global Professor in Criminology at the University of Manchester, UK
  • Ms. Sarah David, Advisor at the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), Germany

This event is co-organised by the International Development Policy journal, the Global Commission on Drug Policy, and the International Solidarity Service of the Canton of Geneva
