The Paris Agreement was signed in 2015 by 195 countries. They made a commitment to work together to address global climate change, hold the rise in global average temperatures to below 2°C and pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C. Achieving the Paris Agreement targets will require decarbonising the world economy by 2050.
However, today, we are off target, by a long way.
Solutions and actions plans do exist. What are they? Which solutions are already in place? How can they be scaled up and what financing is needed? How compatible are they with the Sustainable Development Goals? What are some of the obstacles to their deployment?
The CIES and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development are co-hosting a panel discussion on decarbonising the economy and the potential of Drawdown’s 100 solutions to reverse climate change.
To motivate action on climate change, the project Drawdown, “the most comprehensive plan ever proposed to reverse global warming” describes the 100 most substantive solutions to reverse climate change and achieve Drawdown, the point in time when the concentration of atmospheric greenhouse gases begins to decline on a year-to-year basis.
Led by a coalition of scholars, scientists and entrepreneurs, the Drawdown’s research team has developed realistic, solution-specific models, technical assessments, and policy memos projecting the financial and climate impacts of existing solutions deployed at scale over the next thirty years.
