DOCTORS AT WAR: PALESTINE DOCTORS IN 1948
The outbreak of hostilities in November 1947 created a multi-layered challenge for Palestine's Arab medical community.
The British started withdrawing their budget and resources from public medical facilities, dozens of doctors were forced to leave the country, and war casualties mounted. The war forced those who remained to mobilise medical assistance with limited resources.
Focusing on medical doctors at war offers a lens into the history of the Palestinian middle class, professional unionisation at a time of crisis, bottom-up civilian recruitment, and the post-war fate of this professional community.
