The Centre for Finance and Development has the great pleasure to welcome Tommaso Mancini Griffoli, Deputy Division Chief in the Monetary and Capital Markets Department at the IMF, in charge of work on monetary policy, central banking, and fintech. He will present his latest study on  Casting Light on Central Bank Digital Currencies.

Several central banks, including the Bank of Canada, Bank of England, Norges Bank, and Sveriges Riksbank are actively investigating the possibility of issuing central bank digital currency (CBDC). Like its physical equivalent – cash – CBDC would satisfy the traditional functions of money: a unit of account, a means of payment, and a store of value. But would there be any demand for CBDC? What new private forms of money are arising as competitors? How would households and firms adapt? And what would be the potential costs and risks, including on the financial sector?

The presentation will take place on Thursday 7 March from 18:15 to 19:15 at Maison de la paix, in room S4.

The event is organised in partnership with the Graduate Institute's Bilateral Assistance and Capacity Building for Central Banks (BCC), funded by SECO.
