Cybersecurity tools and best practices for students and researchers
The Tech Hub Digital Skills and Literacy workshops prepare students and researchers for the future by helping them develop the skills and critical thinking they need to navigate a rapidly changing technological environment.
Many researchers work in high-risk contexts and on sensitive topics. In these scenarios, it is helpful to protect yourself, your sources, and your resources from cyber threats, state-sponsored tracking and censorship, or other types of potentially harmful actions.
In this workshop, we will cover basic types of cyber threats that might target you (e.g., phishing), but more importantly, we will provide you with a toolbox of practices, software, and tools to ensure your cybersecurity while researching.
With hands-on demonstrations, we will cover:
- How to get around online censorship;
- Encrypted communications in chat applications, email providers, and video calling software;
- Safe and secure online navigation;
- How to securely delete files from your computer;
- How to encrypt hard drives.
Our goal is to provide researchers with a digital security starter kit to ensure their safety and protection while conducting their research. You will find more information on all tech-related courses, projects and news at the Institute here.
