The Cosmic Race: Education and Colonial Legacy in Mexico’s Late Porfiriato (1895-1900)

Abstract: This paper explores the role of the colonial casta system and, more specifically, the spatial distribution of the Spanish ruling elite of the XVIII century on the construction of Mexico's educational system of the late XIX century.  I employed two novel datasets built using records from ecclesiastical, municipal, state, and national archives and generated a new spatial GIS using administrative maps from the late XIX century.
