This online event discusses comparative studies of international trade and investment regimes from empirical perspectives. Why must we compare the trade and investment regimes? What are the implication of convergence or divergence between the two regimes on the study of international institutions? Our panelists will share their studies, which largely based on empirical evidence, to these questions.

About the speakers

 

Daniel Behn

Dr Daniel Behn is Senior Lecturer in International Dispute Resolution in the School of International Arbitration at the Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS), Queen Mary University of London, School of Law. He is a member of the School of International Arbitration and lecturer on international commercial arbitration, investor-state arbitration and international dispute settlement modules. He also holds a Associate Research Professor position at the PluriCourts Centre for Excellence at the University of Oslo, Faculty of Law.

Damien Charlotin

Damien Charlotin holds a Phd in Law from the University of Cambridge. His thesis, based on data science methods, investigated legal argumentation and citations in international litigation and arbitration, in order to determine what makes an “authority” authoritative in international legal disputes. Prior to this, he studied at Sciences Po Law School in Paris, La Sorbonne, and Columbia Law School. Beyond his academic activities, Damien is a contributor to Investment Arbitration Reporter, where he writes on news and development in the investor-state arbitration field.

Krzysztof Pelc

Krzysztof Pelc is a William Dawson Associate Professor of Political Science at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. His research looks at the international political economy, with a focus on the rules that govern international trade and investment.

Chanya Punyakumpol

Chanya Punyakumpol is a Ph.D candidate at the Graduate Institute, Geneva. She also is a research assistant for Professor Joost Pauwelyn in a research project, Convergence or Divergence? Text-as-data and Network Analysis of International Economic Law Treaties and Tribunals. Her thesis focuses on a comparative study of international economic law, particularly on judicial citations and legalizations of norms between international trade and investment law.

Wolfgang Alschner

An empirical legal scholar specialized in international economic law and the computational analysis of law. He is a permanent faculty member of the Common Law Section with cross-appointment to the Faculty of Engineering, School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He is also a faculty member of the Centre for Law, Technology and Society, and the director of Legal Tech Lab at the University of Ottawa.
