We are delighted to welcome  Dr Sofia Stolk and Prof Tanja Aalberts who will give a presentation titled 'Building (of) the International Community: A History of the Peace Palace Through Transnational Gifts and Local Bureaucracy'.

Dr Sofia Stolk is a senior researcher in international law at the Asser Institute in The Hague and the University of Amsterdam. Her research project 'Imagining Justice' focuses on the use of visual means by international courts and tribunals and explores how different audiences engage with international law through its representation in visual media. She has taught and published internationally about the intersection of international law and art, architecture, theater, and film. Her monograph The Opening Statement of the Prosecution in International Criminal Trials: A Solemn Tale of Horror was published by Routledge in 2021. She is currently editor for the International Legal Theory section of the Leiden Journal of International Law.

 

Prof Tanja Aalberts is Professor of Law and Security at the Faculty of Law, Vrije Universiteit. She has a PhD in Political Science (cum laude). Her research focuses on the interplay between politics and law within global governance, with a specific interest in security matters. She has recently published The Power of Legality (CUP 2016) and Changing Practices of International Law (CUP 2018). Her articles have been published in renowned international journals within both International Law and International Relations. She is a founding member of the European International Studies Association and editor of the interdisciplinary Routledge book series Politics of Transnational Law and general editor of the Leiden Journal of International Law.
