Panel Discussion on Migration for the African Group

With the adoption of the New York Declaration for Refugees by the General Assembly, a process of intergovernmental negotiations is underway for a Global Compact on Migration. Given this background, the Global Migration Centre (GMC), in cooperation with the Permanent Delegation of the African Union and the Permanent Mission of Ethiopia to the United Nations in Geneva, is pleased to have organized a high-level seminar with the purpose of strengthening the legal and technical expertise of the African Union in the process leading to the Global Compact for safe, orderly and regular migration in 2018. 

The programme of the event is as follows:

  • Opening remarks by H. E. Ambassador Malloum Bamanga Abbas, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Chad and H. E. Ambassador Negash Kebret Botora, Permanent Representative of Ethiopia
  • International Law and the Global Compact on Migration by Prof. Dr. Vincent Chetail, Director of the Global Migration Centre, Professor of International Law at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies
  • Geopolitical Dimensions of Migration by Dr. Delidji Eric Degila, Global Migration Centre
  • Migration and Governance by Dr. Céline Bauloz, Migrant Law Specialist at the International Organization of Migration (IOM)
  • Labor Mobility, Decent Work and the Global Compact on Migration by Mr. Shabari Nair, Labor Migration Policy Specialist at the International Labour Organization (ILO)
