Claudie Fioroni is a political sociologist and ethnographer. Over the past eight years, she has investigated social, political and economic change in Middle Eastern countries paying specific attention to the way in which ordinary people live through on-going transformations. She has conducted extensive fieldwork in Syria and Jordan. Her current research focuses on the politics of mining in the Arab region. Previously, she worked on civil society in Syria and published Société civile et évolution de l’autoritarisme en Syrie (eCahier, 2011).

Claudie recently completed her PhD dissertation in the Department of Anthropology and Sociology of Development at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, Geneva (2016). Based on an in-depth ethnographic study of the Jordanian phosphate-mining industry, her dissertation explores the ways in which collective life was (re)organised and (re)negotiated under neoliberal capitalism in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

Claudie has previously been a Visiting Scholar at the Department of MESAAS, Columbia University (New-York, USA) and a Junior Visiting Fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences (Vienna, Austria). She has also taught for the Masters in International Affairs and Masters in Development Studies at the Graduate Institute between 2011 and 2015. During her PhD, Claudie has received a number of awards and fellowships including the SNF Doc.Mobility Fellowship (2015) and the IWM Fellowship (2016).

Claudie is a former student of the Strasbourg Institute of Political Studies and holds an MA in Development Studies from the Graduate Institute, Geneva. She studied Arabic at the University of Damascus between 2010 and 2011. She has previously worked for the French Agency for Development, as well as for several NGOs and research institutions.
