Promoting justice and peace: the work of the Institute of International Law

The Institute of International Law (L’Institut de Droit International) was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1904 for its action in favour of arbitration among States, and continues to make a major contribution to the progressive development and codification of international law. This briefing focuses on three topical issues: Mass Migrations; Review of Measures Implementing Decisions of the Security Council in the field of Targeted Sanctions; and Provisional Measures.

Marcelo Kohen is Professor of International Law at the Graduate Institute, where he has been a member of the faculty since 1995. He is a Titular Member of the Institut de Droit international, and has been Secretary General since 2015. He has worked as legal counsel and advocate for a number of states before the International Court of Justice, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea and other tribunals.
