The Urban Peace Initiative is a collaboration between the Global initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime (GI-TOC) and the Centre on Conflict, Development and Peacebuilding.
In a pilot phase, this collaboration aims to:
Develop a conceptual framework for an Initiative that matches the demand for expertise, know-how and capital for localized efforts to reduce violence, crime and exclusion in cities, including a review of approaches that enable the financing of long-term initiatives in these fields.
Constitute a new network of professionals with expertise and know how to advance city-based efforts to reduce violence, crime and exclusion in cities
Strengthen the exchange of knowledge and know-how an urban peace and illicit economies through the production of a special issue of the Journal of Illicit Economies and Development.
The Urban Peace Initiative also represents the ‘peace pillar’ of an emerging arrangement to strengthen the field of ‘urban diplomacy’ in Geneva.
The special issue has been published in the Journal of Illicit Economies and Development. It includes an introduction by Achim Wennmann (CCDP), John Collins (GI-TOC) and Tuesday Reitano (GI-TOC) as well as a conclusion that summarises the findings by Achim Wennmann.
"Illicit Economies and Urban Peace: Introduction to the Special issue" by Achim Wennmann, John Collins and Tuesday Reitano.
"Illicit Economies Through the Lens of Urban Peace: Towards a New Policy Agenda" by Achim Wennmann.
The full special issue on Urban Peace can be found here: Journal of Illicit Economies and Development, Issue 2, Volume 2.
