A collaborative agreement between the Graduate Institute and the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) will allow students to obtain master's degrees from both institutions in three years, instead of four.
Up to four students each year will be able to spend their first year at PUC-Rio, studying for an MA in International Relations as graduates of the Mestrado Profissional em Análise e Gestão de Políticas Internacionais: Resolução de Conflitos e Cooperação para o Desenvolvimento (MAPI) programme of PUC-Rio’s Institute of International Relations (IRI/PUC-Rio), before transferring to Geneva to spend the next two years working towards one of the Graduate Institute’s two interdisciplinary programmes: the Master in Development Studies or the Master in International Affairs. Participating students’ MA theses will be co-directed by one Graduate Institute and one IRI professor.
The programme will be ideal for MAPI students who intend to pursue careers in international affairs/development studies, particularly in government agencies, public corporations, economic and development institutions, and related consulting organisations.
The programme is open to students enrolled at the MAPI programme, nominated by IRI/PUC-Rio. Students nominated by IRI/PUC-Rio should have completed at least the equivalent of 180 ECTA at PUC-Rio before they enroll at the Graduate Institute.
Two Graduate Institute MA programme options are available:
- Interdisciplinary Master in International Affairs
- Interdiciplinary Master in Development Studies
Students will have the opportunity to take a French language course beginning in August before fall classes begin on 15 September.
Application and admissions
Before applying, interested students must first meet with MAPI coordination. The deadline for application is January 15. Students will be responsible for meeting all application requirements and submitting all materials to the Graduate Institute in Geneva. Admission into the programme is not final until the Graduate Institute approves the applicant’s file according to its prerequisites.
Tuition fees and financial aid
Students will pay tuition fees to PUC-Rio during years one and two. During year three, they will pay all tuition and fees required by the Graduate Institute. For year three, students may apply to the Graduate Institute for need-based financial aid.
