Recent publication on the links between Albert Hirschman and Martin Krygier’s approach to scholarship

What can we learn from Martin Krygier and Albert Hirschman on how to be an engaged and politically active scholar?

In November 2019, the Hague Journal on the Rule of Law published a two-volume special issue reflecting on the life and work of Martin Krygier. Krygier visited and spoke at the Democracy Centre in 2018 on “What is the Point of the Rule of Law”. Professor of law and social theory at the University of New South Wales, he is one of the leading theorists of the concept and practice of the rule of law, with a particular focus on Poland.

Deval Desai, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Democracy Centre, contributed an essay to the collection, entitled “The Passions and the Interests of Martin Krygier”. In it, he draws connections between Krygier’s and Albert Hirschman’s work, and in particular how they both embrace the importance of theory and practice in their scholarship and life’s work.
