PhD Candidate, Alessandro Ambrosino, appeared on Italian national TV as the "young historian" in the cultural TV program "Passato e Presente" (Past and Present).
International History doctoral candidate Alessandro Ambrosino, took part on 9 January 2020 in "Passato e Presente" (Past and Present), a television programme on the Italian channel RAI3.
Mr Ambrosino contributed his analysis as a 'young historian'.
The programme discussed the controversial events that took place during the Italian national liberation struggle in 1943-1945. The show focused on the eastern border, in Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Yugoslav claims on Italian territories in that region. A commando of communist partisans, under the direct control of the Slovenian troops, attacked the headquarters of a non-communist partisan brigade killing eighteen people. The dramatic nature of this episode has long triggered a historical debate on its causes.
Contextualised discussion of the event allowed for a wider examination of World War II beyond the classical Nazi vs. anti-Nazi binary. In particular, this event highlights other struggles during that period, notably between communism and anti-communism, and the many national, ideological and identity issues of disputed border regions.
