MASTERS GRADUATE WINS THE SANREMO NEW VOICES COMPETITION

Andrea Farrés Jiménez, who graduated with a Master in International Law , won the Sanremo New Voices in International Humanitarian Law essay competition. was awarded the prize for her essay on, “The SKYNET Programme and the Principle of Distinction: Why We Should Note Let Artificial Intelligence Lead the Way”. For the distinction, she was invited to present her essay as part of a panel during the 42nd Sanremo Round Table from 4-6 September on Current Issues of International Humanitarian Law, and her work will be published in the conference proceedings.

"I was drafting the essay while writing my dissertation, and my supervisor, Paola Gaeta, gave me insightful feedback on my draft", said Ms Jiménez. "The whole experience was truly enriching."

The first Sanremo New Voices in International Humanitarian Law essay competition was launched in 2018 by the International Committee of the Red Cross and the International Institute of Humanitarian Law, two of the leading institutions in the humanitarian field. For 2019, the two institutions called for submissions to address either “IHL and the challenges related to cyber warfare”, or “artificial intelligence in warfare”.
