Economics in the Time of COVID-19

Three prominent professors from the department of Economics discuss how COVID-19 is changing the world of Economics.

Faster than anyone expected and in ways few anticipated, COVID-19 is changing the world. Economics is changing with it.  Recently, our Professors Richard Baldwin and Beatrice Weder di Mauro co-edited two VoxEU-eBooks.

The first is titled Economics in the Time of COVID-19 and addresses some key questions concerning the economic impact emerging from the pandemic. How, and how far and fast, will the economic damage spread? How bad will it get? How long will the damage last? What are the mechanisms of economic contagion? And, above all, what can governments do about it?

The second book,  Mitigating the COVID Economic Crisis: Act Fast and Do Whatever It Takes, looks beyond a mere analysis of the economic damage caused by the global pandemic and presents policy programmes necessary to mitigate the crisis. Leading economists from around the world are calling for swift policy action. In this second eBook on the coronavirus from CEPR and Vox, the experts are unanimous that the case for decisive and coordinated fiscal stimulus is overwhelming.

Recently, Professors Baldwin, Weder di Mauro and Panizza hold a webinar that drew on contributions from the two books.

VoxEU.org  – CEPR’s policy portal – was set up in June 2007 to promote "research-based policy analysis and commentary by leading economists". Vox's audience consists of economists working in the public sector, private sector, academia and media – as well as students of economics in the broad sense. Vox columns cover all fields of economics broadly defined and is widely read (the site receives about a half million page views per month).
