Karine Peschard is a Postdoctoral research fellow at the Graduate Institute’s Albert Hirschman Centre on Democracy, on a SNF-funded project entitled 'Bringing the seed wars to the courtroom: legal activism and the governance of plant genetic resources in Brazil and India'. She is currently conducting fieldwork for this research project in Brazil, where she is a visiting professor at the Centre for Sustainable Development at the University of Brasília (CDS/UnB).
She received her PhD in Anthropology from McGill University, Canada in 2010. Her doctoral thesis examines the politics of transgenic seeds from the perspective of small farmers in Southern Brazil. In 2011-2013, she held a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) postdoctoral fellowship at The Graduate Institute, in the ANSO department, to conduct comparative research on the implementation of farmers’ rights legislation in Brazil and India. Her research interests are centred on social movements, biotechnology, biodiversity and intellectual property rights, with a comparative focus on Brazil and India.
