It has become clear to most that the major challenge Europe faces is not primarily economic but one of shared or unshared values and sense of identity, national and European. It remains clear to some but not to all that the European Union continues to suffer from a profound democracy deficit fueling the battle cry: "take back control". In his lecture, Professor Joseph Weiler will try to disentangle these various sombre threads.

Joseph H.H. Weiler is University Professor at NYU School of Law and Senior Fellow at the Center for European Studies at Harvard. He served previously as President of the European University Institute, Florence.  Professor Weiler is Co-Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of International Law (EJIL) and the International Journal of Constitutional Law (ICON).

Moderation: Paola Gaeta, Professor of International Law.
