Dr. Ekaterina Mikhailova is a Human Geographer working at the crossroads of Urban Studies, Border Studies and Eurasian Studies. She joined the Graduate Institute as a guest lecturer for the fall semester 2021/2022 to teach a course “City Diplomacy: the Rise of Cities as Global Actors” within the Interdisciplinary Master Programmes.

She has been working in Geneva since 2020 as an awardee of the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship for postdocs at the Department of Geography and Environment, University of Geneva. Before UNIGE, Dr. Mikhailova worked as a research fellow at the University of Eastern Finland (Finland), Lomonosov Moscow State University (Russia) and the University of Tromsø - Arctic University of Norway (Norway). Dr. Mikhailova co-edited two edited volumes: Twin Cities: Urban Communities, Borders and Relationships over Time (Routledge, 2019) and Twin Cities across Five Continents: Interactions and Tensions on Urban Borders (Routledge, forthcoming in 2021) and is an author of over forty English and Russian publications on city’s internationalisation, cross-border communities, transfrontier cooperation, governance, migration and border tourism.
