The Foundation Board of the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies has appointed Marie-Laure Salles Director of the Institute. She will begin her new role on 1 September 2020.
Ms Salles is currently Dean of the School of Management and Innovation at Sciences Po, Paris, a school that she helped establish. Previously, she held various successive positions at École supérieure des sciences économiques et commerciales (ESSEC Business School) in Paris, including Dean of Faculty, Dean of PhD Programmes, and Director of the Centre of Research on Capitalism, Globalisation and Governance, all the while occupying a position as professor. Ms Salles holds a PhD in Sociology from Harvard University. She is already familiar with the Institute, having spent a year as a visiting professor as well as a visiting fellow at the Global Governance Centre.
“The Foundation Board is very pleased to announce this nomination and looks forward to collaborating with an experienced woman who fulfils the exigent demands required by such a position”, said Mr Rolf Soiron, President of the Institute’s Foundation Board.
Building on the Institute’s history, recent development, and values of excellence, independence, responsibility, solidarity and diversity, Ms Salles’s first objective will be to continue the Institute’s evolution as a world-renowned academic and research institution with a vision to attract the best students and researchers. She will also be responsible for preparing the Institute to face the challenges of a changing world. “I would like to thank the Board for placing its confidence in me by confirming my nomination as Director of the Institute beginning 1 September 2020. I have a deep respect for everything the Institute represents and I am honoured to receive this nomination. I look forward to working in close collaboration with faculty, administrative staff, the management team and Board”, said the future Director, who will further elaborate once she is more familiar with the main priorities of the position.
Mr Philippe Burrin will actively continue his duties as the Institute’s Director until 31 August 2020. He was named Director of the Graduate Institute of International Studies, Geneva (HEI) in 2004, then became Director of the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in 2008. As Director, he participated in bringing together HEI and the Graduate Institute of Development Studies (IUED), establishing a new institution that would prolong the former institutions’ inspiration within a renewed framework. He also participated in the creation of the new Institute’s campus. The Foundation Board wishes to express its deep appreciation and sincerest gratitude for all that Mr Burrin has accomplished at the Institute.
