Geneva expansion continues with addition of Alumnus Jasper M. Wauters

A skilled international trade practitioner with substantial experience in dispute settlement cases before the WTO joined Geneva office.

Alumnus Jasper M. Wauters' arrival continues the worldwide expansion of King & Spalding's international trade practice. In June, the firm brought on prominent international trade partner Daniel L. Crosby and announced the opening of its trade-oriented office in Geneva, Switzerland. The Geneva team, which now consists of five members, also includes managing partner Stephen J. Orava, associate Stephanie Nolan and senior trade advisor Joost Pauwelyn, Professor of International Law at the Graduate Institute. Most recently, the firm announced that S. Bruce Wilson, the former Director for Legal Affairs of the World Trade Organization, will join its Washington, D.C., office as senior counsel effective October 1, 2010.

"Jasper is a well-recognized WTO expert and a highly experienced international trade lawyer who further enhances the capabilities of our Geneva office and our global trade practice," said Orava. "King & Spalding is recognized as one of the leading international trade firms in the world and Jasper's arrival further builds upon that reputation."

Wauters advises private and sovereign clients on all aspects of international trade and investment law, with a particular emphasis on WTO dispute settlement proceedings as well as subsidies and trade remedies rules. He regularly advises clients on free trade negotiations and has actively been involved in the negotiation and drafting of free trade agreements on behalf of sovereign clients. He also advises private and sovereign entities on the international trade aspects of recent developments in climate change regulation, examining the WTO consistency of various legislative proposals and proposing alternative approaches. In the 2010 edition of the Chambers Global guide, he was named one of Switzerland's "Up and oming" lawyers in the area of International Trade/WTO.

Wauters, who previously worked for more than seven years at the WTO advising WTO dispute settlement panels, joins the firm from the Geneva office of White & Case LLP. He received his LL.B. degree, magna cum laude, from Catholic University of Leuven and his Master in International Law (1997) from the Graduate Institute.

King & Spalding's international trade practice consists of more than 45 lawyers and consultants, including former government officials, former WTO officials, trade remedy accounting and data specialists, and foreign legal experts. The group received the Chambers USA Award for Excellence in both 2008 and 2009 -- the top award given to a U.S. law firm by that rating organization -- for the firm's pre-eminence and noteworthy achievements in international trade, including outstanding work, impressive strategic growth and excellence in client service.
