According to the World Health Organisation, at least half of the world’s population does not have full coverage of essential health services. In addition, health expenses have pushed more than 100 million people into extreme poverty. On 23 September 2019, heads of states and health experts will address the importance of universal health coverage as a key target to achieving the sustainable development goal 3 on global health. In the light of this UN high-level meeting, Dr Zsuzsanna Jakab, Deputy Director-General of the World Health Organisation, and Professor Ilona Kickbusch, Chairperson of the Global Health Centre at the Graduate Institute, will reflect on the outcomes and perspectives for universal health coverage.
