A number of forces are at work at the economic, social, and political level as countries all over the world transition to Universal Health Coverage (UHC). This event will focus on the emerging concept of the health economy and its potential implications on the future of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) considering increasing private sector involvement in the global health landscape and the changing roles of global health actors.

At large, the new health economy has the potential to translate investments in health to both economic growth and equitable improvements in health. It obliges policy-makers at all levels to consider the social, political, and commercial determinants of health inherent in both policy and investment decisions across different sectors. At the same time, it encourages public and private sector cooperation to optimise impact and inclusion while fostering equity and innovation in health, together with economic and social development.

The event, held on the margins of the 69th session of the World Health Assembly, will address the governance and policy challenges related to the concept of the health economy and the risks and opportunities associated with increased public and private partnerships.  Professor Ilona Kickbusch, Director of the Global Health Centre, will provide an introduction and Jeffrey Sturchio, President & CEO of Rabin Martin, will moderate the panel discussion of distinguished speakers.
