The Global Nutrition Report 2014, launched during the 2nd International Conference of Nutrition (ICN2) in Rome last November, tracks worldwide progress in improving nutrition status and identifies bottlenecks to change. The Report's assessment of the Global Nutrition Targets for 2025 set by the World Health Assembly (WHA) shows that the world is not on track to meet any of these goals. A strong commitment to improving nutrition faster and build this goal into the post-2015 process is needed. Better data on nutrition outcomes and nutrition financing, as well as investments in nutrition-sensitive programs and the development of effective accountability mechanisms, will be crucial elements in scaling up nutrition action.

Strategies to bridge the gap between data and policy action and opportunities to ensure measurable progress within the Global Monitoring Framework for the Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2) and the post-2015 processes will also be explored by keynote addresses and a panel discussion including engaged academics, policy makers and international organizations.

This side-event to the 136th session of the WHO Executive Board will consist of:

  • Keynote presentation on the Global Nutrition Report by Prof. Lawrence Haddad (Senior Research Fellow, IFPRI)

  • Panel discussion with nutrition stakeholders moderated by Prof. Ilona Kickbusch (Director of the Global Health Programme at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, Geneva)

  • Presentation of the WHO policy briefs and the nutrition target tracking tool by Dr. Francesco Branca (Director of Nutrition for Health and Development, WHO and UNSCN Executive Secretary)
