Immunities of International Organisations: Theory and Practice

, -
Add to Calendar

The role, importance and consequences of the actions of international organisations are increasingly questioned, their privileges and immunities criticised for shielding organisations from accountability and contributing to grave injustices. The recent litigation against the UN on Srebrenica and Haiti is a case in point. On the occasion of the publication of the first commentary on the conventions on the privileges and immunities of the United Nations and specialised agencies, this panel will look at privileges and immunities of international organisations from both a theoretical and practical angle and will contribute to clarify and demystify their impact and implications.

Panelists:

  • Professor August Reinisch, Head, Section of International Law and International Relations, University of Vienna
  • Tilmann Geckeler, Principal Legal Officer, Legal Office, International Labour Organisation
  • Danielle Werthmüller, Chief, Section on Privileges and Immunities, Permanent Mission of Switzerland in Geneva

Moderator:

  • Gian Luca Burci, Adjunct Professor of International Law, The Graduate Institute, Geneva

NB: Discussions will be in English and French
