For the second time this year, the Graduate Institute’s Environmental Committee is organising a ‘Green Week’ from Tuesday 24 to Thursday 26 April 2012. The theme will be ‘Rio+20′, in reference to the upcoming UN Conference on Sustainable Development taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 20th-22nd June 2012. Green Week will consist of two informal discussions featuring high-level panelists from various international organisations and the screening of a documentary on climate change. The topic of the first informal discussion (24 April) is the green economy, sustainability and poverty eradication while the second discussion (26 April) will focus on the institutional framework for sustainable development and food security. The documentary (25 April) offers a scientific perspective on sustainable development in the context of the climate change debate. The IHEID Environmental Committee in also working in partnership with GIMUN Youth Perspectives: Environmental Issues in Contemporary Societies Conference which will take place from Thursday 26 April evening to Sunday 29 April at the Graduate Institute offering the students and interested people an entire week of events dedicated to reflect on challenges and opportunities for sustainable solutions to various issues surrounding the environment.

The Environmental Committee is a student-run initiative forming part of the Graduate Institute Student Association (GISA). It has 12 active members and is managed by the GISA Environmental Affairs Officer, Zuzana Hudáková, a second year Master in International Relations / Political Science. In addition to organising events, the Committee liaises with the Institute’s administration to promote environmental initiatives such as recycling, less paper use and a more bicycle friendly campus. The Committee also promotes sustainability at the Institute and has working groups that focus on specific themes such as the Institute’s new Campus de la Paix set to be completed in 2013, and others.
