Employment in Europe: Great Depression?

, -
Add to Calendar

More than 25 million people in the EU are looking for a job right now. Over a quarter of Spanish and Greeks are unemployed; and over half of young Spaniards and Greeks, 40% of young Italians, and 25% of young French are out of work. Forecasts show little change over the coming four years.

As Europe slowly recovers from five years of economic crisis, why are some economies able to create jobs and others not?

  • Should economic policies be more employment-led, or should we just aim for growth and hope for the best?
  • Is technological change behind increasing “job-less” economic growth?
  • What should governments and European institutions do differently?
  • What are the long term implications of chronic unemployment, especially of young people?
  • Will Europe ever see full employment again?

Join us for an interactive news briefing with global labour expert Raymond Torres and Economics Professor Ugo Panizza.
