«Le Grand Méliès»
1952, un film de Georges Franju, 31 minutes.


Au début des années cinquante, Georges Franju réalise un court métrage sur la vie de Georges Méliès, pionnier du cinéma qui n’était pas, alors, pleinement reconnu. Ce film de 31 minutes est assez émouvant car le rôle de Méliès est tenu par son fils, André. Même s’il n’est visiblement pas un acteur, celui-ci donne un certain souffle au film, aidé par la présence de la seconde femme du réalisateur, Jeanne d’Alcy qui, à 87 ans, joue son propre rôle. Le film retrace la vie du réalisateur dans ses grandes lignes, reconstitue la fameuse rencontre avec Louis Lumière, recrée le premier lieu de tournage en plein air, explique quelques trucages (notamment la tête qui grossit dans L’homme à la tête de choux) et la fin de Méliès comme vendeur de bonbons et de jouets à la Gare Montparnasse, le tout agrémenté d’extraits de quelques films, notamment du Voyage dans la Lune. Two brothers who have lost all contact are suddenly brought together by chance, playing opposite roles in a racist beating: Itso intervenes to help a family of Turkish tourists attacked by a gang of neo-fascist thugs, which Georgi (the younger one) has recently joined. Georgi, now being asked to get more involved, starts to question his implication with the gang.
