MIS Requirements - International Relations/ Political Science Unit

Total Number of Credits

120, broken down into 90 course credits and 30 credits for the MIS Thesis (“dissertation”); each 2h per week semester course is worth 6 credits. 

Students are permitted to take up to 12 additional credits in Political Science without permission.  In case the desired credits are in another discipline, special permission is required. 

Required Courses

6 courses

A sequence (one per semester in semesters 1-3) of the following courses on concepts and methodology:

  1.   Theories and Theorists in International Relations
  2.   Research Design in Political Science
  3.   Statistics for Social Sciences I

 

Three out of the following five Study of International Politics courses: 

  I.   Dynamics of Conflict and Cooperation
  II.   International Political Economy
  III.   Foreign Policy Analysis
  IV.   Multilateral Governance and International Organizations
  V.   Comparative Politics

 

Electives in Political Science

7 courses among a list of substantive or methodological topics 

Electives Outside of Political Science

Students must take 2 complementary courses outside of political science.  For these complementary studies, they can choose among classes in any of the other three disciplines at the Institute.  In addition, and depending on their topic of study, students may be authorized to take up to 2 elective courses outside of political science (in that case the number of electives to be taken in political science would be reduced accordingly).
