Regulations

General requirements

  • Follow the programme of study
  • Write and present successfully a preliminary thesis proposal
  • Write and present successfully a doctoral thesis 

Programme of Study

SEMESTERS 1-2:

Courses

These regulations apply to all students beginning their doctoral studies at the Institute on or after 1 September 2010.

4 courses (24 credits), all to be taken in the first year of studies:

  • Doctoral Seminar in Political Science (Autumn 2011, Biersteker)
  • Qualitative Methods in International Relations Research (Autumn 2011, Meierding)
  • Statistics for International Relations II (Spring 2011, Horber)*
  • One of the five The Study of International Politics (SIP) courses:
  SIP 1:   Dynamics of Conflict and Cooperation (Spring 2012, Meierding)
  SIP 2:   International Political Economy (Autumn 2011, Dupont)
  SIP 3:   Foreign Policy Analysis (Autumn 2011, Hofmann)
 

SIP 4:

  Multilateral Governance and International Organizations (Spring 2012, Andonova)
  SIP 5:   Comparative Politics (Spring 2012, Bhavnani)

 

* A prerequisite for enrolment for Statistics II is that students must have passed a Master's level statistics course in the preceding 4 years. Students not fulfilling this requirement MUST register for Statistics I in Autumn 2011.

 

Political Science Colloquia

During their first year, all doctoral students are required to attend regularly the political science colloquia announced by the Political Science Unit in the course of the academic year.  

 

Doctoral Retreat

All first-year doctoral students are required to attend the one-day annual doctoral retreat and present a paper on work connected to their thesis.

 


SEMESTERS 3-4:

Preliminary Thesis Proposal

By the end of their third semester, students must submit a formal thesis proposal (“mémoire préliminaire de thèse”) to be defended orally before a faculty committee.

 

Doctoral Retreat

All second-year doctoral students are required to attend the one-day annual doctoral retreat and present a paper on work connected to their thesis.

To ensure fulfillment of all PhD requirements, students should consult the HEI Studies Regulations on the Institute web site.

 

Each candidate must submit his/her thesis in the 8 semesters following registration to the programme.
