Europe

Europe is conceived here in all its complexity. It is studied as an international actor (the foreign policy of European states, the security and diplomatic dimension of Europe as a unitary actor, the history of European empires and colonialism), a political project (the political history of Europe and the history of European integration) and as a cultural entity (the history of the European system and cultural aspects of European integration). Courses taught in the Department therefore examine Europe from several perspectives. First, some courses explore the political history of Europe over the last three centuries, examining the foundations of European politics and ideas. Second, Europe is examined as one of the major players in the broader history of international and transnational relations. Third, some courses focus on the origins and the process of the regional integration experiment currently taking place in Europe. The history and the politics of European integration are covered, with a special focus on the cultural and identity aspects of the process.

Dedicated Courses (not offered every academic year)

Resources within the Institute

Currently about ten professors across the various disciplinary departments and interdisciplinary centres at the Graduate Institute are experts on one or another aspect of European Studies, either from an economic, historical, gender or security perspective.

Primary resources in Geneva and surrounding areas

The archives of the many international organisations based in Geneva are a great resource on the involvement of European states and non-state movements in international affairs, especially outside Europe, particularly in the twentieth century.
For the European Union, the Jean Monnet Foundation based in Lausanne holds a unique archival collection. The personal archives of Jean Monnet (tens of thousands of documents), allow us to follow his experiences and work, and cover major events of the century over several continents. The other archives preserved by the Jean Monnet Foundation are those of Robert Marjolin, Robert Schuman, Paolo Emilio Taviani, Robert Triffin, Lord Strathallan, Jacques Van Helmont and François Fontaine.
