East Asia

Courses and research in the Department examine fundamental political, economic and security issues in the Asia and Pacific region. The emphasis is on the post-Cold War period, though in a longer-term perspective. Attention focuses on military capacities, doctrines, organisations and international relations. Particular stress is put on the interaction between domestic and foreign-security policies. Topics include foreign policies of major powers in the region, China and globalisation, East Asia and the EU, the Chinese military and cross-Strait relations, US-China relations, the US-Japan security arrangement, the situation in the Korean Peninsula, the nuclearised subcontinent, and the ASEAN regional arrangement. The industrialisation of East Asia, from the late-nineteenth century to the present, is also considered.
