Key challenges in international relations

 

  • Next session:  19 - 30 August 2019
  • Applications open mid-February
  • Understand the UN System, particularly its creation, development and various agencies.
  • Explore the challenges faced by the United Nations and debate the future of international cooperation.

 

At the end of the 2 weeks, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the core mission of the UN and how it deals with key global issues such as human rights and the environment.
  • Critically analyse key issues around peace and security, human rights and humanitarian challenges, international development, and North-South relations.
  • Appraise the future of multilateral action through conference simulations and role play, as well as visits to key institutions in international Geneva.
  • Engage with academics and practitioners on what could be done to reinvent global governance at a time of great international uncertainty

Format : 26 hours of classes per week over 2 weeks

  • Lectures with Faculty from the Graduate Institute, Geneva
  • Afternoon workshops and visits to the United Nations
  • Small-group study sessions 
  • Emphasis on role-playing and simulations to strengthen transferable skills  (Model United Nations: conference simulation where students assume the roles of diplomats/government officials and learn how to negotiate)
  • Roundtable on cutting edge issues in international affairs
  • Individual advising on post-graduate studies and careers in international affairs
  • Social events (optional): discover the city of Geneva through a series of events with other participants
  • Lectures and discussions on concepts and key issues in peace and security, human rights and humanitarian challenges, international development, North-South relations and the future of global governance.

Jérôme Duberry

VISITING FELLOW, PROGRAMME FOR THE STUDY OF INTERNATIONAL GOVERNANCE, THE GRADUATE INSTITUTE, GENEVA

Jérôme Duberry is Research Associate at the Programme for the Study of International Governance and Post-Doc Researcher at the Centre de Compétences Dusan Sidjanski en Etudes Européennes. His research activities revolve around the contemporary transformations of society and international institutions in a process of adaptation to the emergence of new technologies. He is particularly interested in innovative public and private governance systems, and examines how information and communication technologies influence global multi-stakeholder decision-making processes. He also works with innovative marketers, PR leaders, and HR professionals to bring the power of digital technologies to their organization. He holds a PhD (Sobresaliente Cum Laude) in International Relations from the University Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona), and two MA degrees in International Relations from the University of Geneva/IHEID and in Diplomacy from the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Escuela Diplomatica de Madrid).

 

Beris Gwynne

FOUNDER/MANAGING DIRECTOR, INCITARE

Ms. Gwynne began her career working as a diplomat in the Australian Foreign Service, serving in Vietnam, Poland, Mexico and Nauru before joining Australia's International Development Agency (AusAID). In 1994, Beris took a leave of absence to take up a senior position with World Vision Australia, deciding in 1997 to pursue her interests in policy relevant research, evidence based advocacy and innovation in development cooperation and humanitarian assistance in the not-for-profit sector. She was appointed Executive Director of a privately funded development think-tank in Brisbane, Australia in 2000. In 2006, she took up senior positions with The Global Water Partnership in Stockholm, then with World Vision International (WVI), serving as WVI Vice-President for Global Accountability (2008-14) and as Representative to the UN and Director of WVI’s office in Geneva (from 2011 until January 2016).

Ms. Gwynne holds a Graduate Diploma in International Law from the Australian National University and a Masters in International Relations (specialising in International Law and Human Rights) from Deakin University. She is a Senior Associate of the Centre for Socio-Eco-Nomic Development (CSEND) and affiliated with The Relational Thinking Network. Incitāre was established in January 2016 as a platform for collaboration to promote the use of strategic foresight (future thinking) to support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, incentivising high impact multi-stakeholder partnerships through closer attention to measures of transformation.

 

Khalid Koser

GLOBAL COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND RESILIENCE FUND

Dr. Khalid Koser is Executive Director of the Secretariat of the Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund (GCERF). Dr. Koser is also Non-Resident Senior Fellow in Foreign Policy Studies at the Brookings Institution, Associate Fellow at Chatham House, Research Associate at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, Non-Resident Fellow at the Lowy Institute in Sydney and Extraordinary Professor in Conflict, Peace and Security in the Faculty of Humanities and Sciences at the University of Maastricht. He is also chair of the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council on Migration, and Editor of the Journal of Refugee Studies. Dr. Koser is a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

 

Cécile Molinier

FORMER SENIOR UNDP(UNITED NATIONS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME) OFFICIAL, GENEVA

Cécile Molinier joined the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in 1992 from the UN Secretariat where she had held several positions in Conference Services, the Staff Union, the Department of Management, and as Special Assistant to the Director General for Development and International Economic Cooperation. Before joining the United Nations, she lectured in French at Smith College in Massachusetts and taught English in France. Her first assignment in UNDP was as Deputy Resident Representative in Tunisia followed by Resident Coordinator/Resident Representative assignments in Sao Tomé and Principe, Togo, and Mauritania respectively. She was reassigned as Director to the UNDP Office in Geneva in August 2007. As UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative at country level, Ms. Molinier contributed to the achievement of national development objectives in strategic areas such as community based management of natural resources in Tunisia, environmental protection, poverty reduction and capacity development in Sao Tomé and Principe, mobilization against HIVAIDS in Togo, support to democratic transition and human rights in Mauritania. At Headquarters level, until her retirement in October 2012, she was instrumental in promoting the UN reform agenda and UNDP corporate priorities by developing innovative partnerships with non-traditional partners such as sub-national authorities, the academic community, civil society organizations and the private sector. Since retirement, she has been lecturing on global development issues and strategic management at academic institutions. Cecile Molinier holds both Bachelor and Masters of Arts degrees in English from the Sorbonne in Paris, a Masters degree in English Literature from Queen Mary College, London University and an MBA (Organisational Behaviour) from Pace University in New York. She is proficient in several languages such as French, English, German, Spanish and Portuguese.
