International Environmental Institutions

States recognise they cannot unilaterally solve global environmental problems and have established a variety of inter- national institutions. This course seeks to understand how and why institutions vary to understand how to better institute solutions to environmental problems. This advanced seminar combines theoretical themes from the literature on international institutions -€”their creation, design, membership, operation, effectiveness, and complex setting- €”with practical applications of insights drawn from these literatures to a range of major environmental issues such as climate, water, fisheries, nutrition, and biodiversity. The course alternates every other week between literature and application, with each application taking the form of a different interactive exercise.
