Gender and Development: From Theory to Practice
DE139 | Autumn | 6 ECTS
How is development understood and experienced by women and men? To what extent a narrowly conceived gender binary is helpful in formulating and implementing development polices? What kind of "gender bias" underscores developmental thinking and practices? What is to count as gender and development in the new century? The course: (a) articulates the urgent need for a more inclusive approach to gender in development (b) dissects the theories, policies, and practices underscoring global development initiatives and relates these moves to issues of access, equity, and rights informed by local and global complexities (c) offers a unique opportunity to critically analyze, with gender experts from various Geneva-based international organizations, the programmes and gender policies of these organizations.
