Students are expected to:

  • Follow the 2 compulsory courses on methods: “Statistical Methods for Social Sciences” in the first semester and “Social Inquiry and Qualitative Methods for Development” in the second semester.
  • Take at least 2 out of the 4 compulsory courses: “Economics of Development”, “Gender and Development: From Theory to Practice”, “History, Theory and Practice of Development”, and “Poverty and Inequality”.  Students without a background on Economics are strongly advised to take “Economics of Development”. If any of the other compulsory courses are taken in addition to the 2 required they will be credited as free electives.
  • Choose one track as a Major among the tracks offered in the MDEV: Power, Conflict and Development, Mobilities, Spaces and Cities, or Environment, Resources and Sustainability. In each track, there is either one compulsory course or a choice of two courses from which students should take one. In addition, they should obtain 18 credits of elective courses within the track. If the other compulsory course in the Power, Conflict and Development track, is taken in addition to the one required, it will count towards the 18 credits of elective courses required within the track.
  • Choose one track as a Minor among the tracks offered either in the MDEV, other than the one chosen as the Major, or those offered in addition in the MIA (Global Security, and Trade and International Finance), or the Minor offered on Global Health. Students should obtain 12 credits of courses within the Minor, be they compulsory or elective. Students will be asked to identify the Major and the Minor that they have chosen before the beginning of the second semester.
  • Obtain 12 credits in workshops, 18 credits in disciplinary or interdisciplinary elective courses which students can choose freely, complete a capstone project for 9 credits, and produce a master thesis for 18 credits. Students can also validate an internship for 3 credits. If they choose not to do so, they are required to obtain an additional 3 credits of free elective courses.

The courses listed in the MDEV and MIA specialisation tracks or in the Global Health Minor can be taken as free electives by students who are not taking the track. Students taking these courses as part of a track will however have priority.  In addition, students can select elective courses specific to the interdisciplinary masters or courses offered in the disciplinary programmes from the list below.In the case of courses offered in the disciplinary programmes, students enrolled in those programmes will have priority.

Students having entered in autumn 2017 are expected to:

  • Complete any remaining compulsory courses.
  • Complete the course requirement for the Major in the chosen track. In each track there is either one compulsory course or a choice of two courses from which students should take one. In addition, students should obtain 18 credits of elective courses within the track. If the other compulsory course in the track, when available, is taken in addition to the one required, it will count towards the 18 credits of elective courses required within the track.
  • Complete the course requirement for the Minor chosen in the MDEV (for which they need to take a compulsory course and another 6 credits of elective courses in the track over the course of their studies).
  • Achieve the 12 credits in workshops, 12 credits in disciplinary or interdisciplinary elective courses which they can choose freely, complete in the first semester the capstone project they have started in the spring semester of this year for 9 credits, and produce athesis for 18 credits.
  • Students can also validate an internship for 3 credits. If they choose not to do so, they are required to obtain an additional 3 credits of free elective courses.
