This course has the aim to give a first overview over the subject matter of the legal rules applicable mainly during armed conflicts. The point is to train a proper understanding of the various branches of that law, mainly the complicated conditions of its applicability, and its substantive rules centered upon the conduct of hostilities and the protection of persons. It is also to discuss and classify timely issues in the context of the “war against terrorism” or of the “scope of battlefield”. Some legal background knowledge, in particular of public international law, is required
