The Corporation: Historical, Ethnographic, and Ethical Perspectives

This seminar situates and problematizes the internal logics, competing subjectivities, and diverse organizational forms taken by corporations across time and space. The course will cover the following themes: i) the historical evolution of the modern corporation as a moral person and legal concept; ii) the corporate form as an ethnographic location rooted in the social; iii) transparency, accountability and governance challenges in the corporate sector; iv) new ethical and social innovations, from benefit corporations, social enterprises, and venture philanthropy.
