Social Movements and the Environment

MINT049 | Autumn | 6 ECTS

Social movements have become one of the major modes of political expression and change in contemporary societies. In this class, we start by exploring the basic concepts and theories needed for the analysis of social movements. We then turn to the field of environmental justice, in reference to the ways environmental risks and benefits are distributed across different social groups or societies, and to some tools and legal instruments available to militants. Third, we apply this combined approach to contemporary case related to issues such as mining, oil production, land and water, climate, and nature conservation.
