This course will discuss the role of government interventions in addressing environmental pollution and climate change and provide an introduction to the economics of environmental policy. The following topics will be covered (i) market failures and the environment (ii) the efficiency of policy instruments (carbon taxes, environmental standards, cap-and-trade, voluntary agreements); (iii) innovation and diffusion of green technologies (iv) energy and consumers' behaviour, (v) globalization, trade and climate change. The course will seek to convey some of the basic concepts of environmental economics and initiate in-class discussions through real-world examples.
