Students are required to obtain 18 credits of introductory courses. The course “Global Governance and Regulation: Actors and Processes” is taught in the first semester and is compulsory. In addition, students should take two courses out of a menu of three (“Applying Organisation Theories to Practice”, “Gender and International Affairs”, “International Policy Analysis”).

Students are also required to take two methods courses, “Statistical Methods for Social Sciences” in the first semester and “Qualitative Methods” in the second semester.

Student should choose one track as a major. In each track, there is either one compulsory course or a menu of two courses from which students should take one. In addition, they should obtain 18 credits of elective courses in the track.

Students should choose one track as a minor. They should take the compulsory course of this chosen track (or one of them when there is a menu of two) as well as obtain 6 credits of its elective courses.

Finally, students should obtain 12 credits in workshops, obtain another 12 credits in elective courses that they can choose freely, complete a capstone project for 9 credits and complete a thesis for 18 credits. They can also validate an internship for 3 credits. If they choose not to do so, they are required to obtain an additional 3 credits of free elective courses.

Il est recommandé aux étudiants d’effectuer la majorité de leurs cours et séminaires au cours des trois premiers semestres, afin de consacrer le quatrième semestre à la rédaction du mémoire de master. Les cours optionnels peuvent être étalés sur les quatre semestres, mais il est important de noter que les étudiants doivent obtenir un minimum de 18 crédits ECTS pour chaque semestre, et qu’aucun cours pris et raté au quatrième semestre ne pourra être repris. 
Students are advised to complete most of their course-work requirements in the first three semesters in order to devote the fourth semester to the writing of their thesis. Elective courses may be spread over all four semesters but please note that the completion of a minimum of 18 ECTS credits each semester is compulsory and that no courses taken and failed in the fourth semester may be repeated.

SÉMINAIRE DE RECHERCHE APPLIQUÉE 2 | APPLIED RESEARCH SEMINAR 2
(9 ECTS)

Students are required to complete a 9-ECTS Applied Research Seminar (ARS) within their specialisation track. This will enable them to work with a key partner institution of the Graduate Institute and get exposure to real-world governance problems while also building networks within International Geneva. The ARS is a two-semester project, launched in the spring semester of the first year and completed in the autumn semester of the second year. It cannot be completed by students planning to go on an exchange during the third semester.

Students are additionally required to complete 33 ECTS of elective courses outside of their specialisation track, from a menu of free options that are specific to the interdisciplinary studies, and/or a menu of courses offered by the five disciplinary departments of the Graduate Institute. The electives can be freely distributed over the four semesters.
(Please note that the courses offered by disciplinary departments are subject to adequate background and places being available. Some courses may demand prerequisites. Students should consult the syllabus and/or faculty members for course-specific information.)

ATELIERS DE COMPÉTENCES | SKILLS WORKSHOPS

Skills workshops are applied modules providing students with practical tools to become effective decision-makers. As part of the ongoing reform of the MIA, participation in a skills workshop accounts for 3 ECTS. Students are required to complete two workshops during the course of their curriculum, chosing among the following options:


STAGE | INTERNSHIP
(3 ECTS)


Each student can receive 3 credits for an internship with an institution or company whose mission is relevant to the curriculum. He will have to work at least 100 hours, seek the approval of the MINT coordinator via a dedicated form and submit a final report at the end of the internship (more information here). The internship will appear on the transcript of results and replace one 3-ECTS elective class.
