) and send them a motivation letter (with a comprehensive argument why you feel you are in the wrong programme, and how the new programme would better contribute to your academic and professional goals). The decision will then be taken by the Director of Studies after consultation of the two heads ot programme/department concerned.

Q: I have a scheduling problem regarding a course, or would like to de-register from a courses. What should I do?

Q: I would like to obtain credits for a course offered by an institution of higher learning other than the Graduate Institute. How do I go about this?
Q: What is the maximum number of courses I can get credits for from an institution of higher learning other than the Graduate Institute?
A: The maximum number of credits that can be obtained this way is 12 for the all curriculum.
Q: I feel I have already substantial knowledge in one of the compulsory courses offered as part of the interdisciplinary Master programmes. Can I ask for a substitution?
A: Please fill out and sign this form, highlighting the course you plan to substitute and its proposed replacement, together with the syllabus and results transcript of the courses you followed during your previous curriculum and submit it to Mr. James Sellaro at email@example.com
. For the course “Statistical Methods for Social Sciences”, offered during the first semester, a waiver test will be organised in the first half of September. It is mandatory to take either the course or the waiver test. If you feel you have a solid background in basic statistics, we encourage you to take the test. Further information will be provided over the summer, including the syllabus and reading material from previous years.
Q: What is the maximum amount of workshops I can register for during the same semester?
A: The maximum number of workshops is two per semester.
Q: The workshop I am interested in is fully booked and I am on a waiting list. What do I do?
A: If you cannot get a place in a workshop of your liking, don’t worry. All workshops held in one semester will also be offered during the following semester, unless otherwise announced.
Q: The workshop I am interested in is fully booked and I am on a waiting list. Is there a way to increase the effectives of places for this workshop?
A: The workshops are designed in such a way that the number of effectives corresponds to the best possible learning outcomes for the participants. Therefore, in order not to dilute the quality of teaching, the number of effectives will not be increased.
Q: I would like to de-register from a workshop I am already registered for after registration has already closed. How do I go about this?
Q: What is a Capstone project?
A: The Capstone Projects are applied research projects, where teams of two to three students conduct research on a theme of topic related to global governance or international development. The Capstone projects are applied and practical research seminars that are undertaken in collaboration with an external partner and academically supervised by one of the Institute’s faculty members. The Capstones are firmly anchored within the activities of Geneva-based organizations, including governmental, non-governmental, international and not-for-profit organizations, as well as private sector corporations, associations and foundations.
Q: What topics or themes are typically covered in Capstones?
A: The Capstones vary widely thematically, ranging from international trade and finance, unemployment, cyber warfare and security, conflict and violent extremism, the environment, health, human rights, minorities, questions pertaining to governance such as democracy, authoritarianism, youth, technology, free speech, and the rule of law, as well as to topics that are relevant to international development and business. In terms of content, they are linked into the respective specialization tracks, with the academic responsible for the track on charge of the overall supervision of the Capstones.
Q: What is the duration span of a Capstone?
A: The Capstone is a nine-months process that start in April and ends in December, concluded with a 10’000 word written report to be submitted to the partner institution, as well as a public presentation on the main outcomes and findings.

Q: I'm having trouble submitting my Master thesis in time. Can I get an extension of my deadline?
A: If you are unable to submit your thesis in time due to a medical issue of another reason that can be qualified as force majeure, you are able to do so by send an email to Mr. James Sellaro at firstname.lastname@example.org
with a rationale of why you are failing to meet the deadline. The decision will then be taken by the Direction of Studies.
Q: I would like to go abroad for one semester to study at a institution of higher learning other than the Graduate Institute. How do I go about this?
A: Please be aware that if you go on exchange you would not be able to complete the Capstone project, which is a vital pillar of the Master in International Affairs and the Master in Development Studies. However, if you wish to study abroad for a semester, please visit this page

Q: I feel that I have been graded unfairly and I would like to dispute the grade. What is the procedure for this?
A: Students who wish to dispute a grade can launch an appeal. Before going into this procedure, carefully read the academic regulations
(article 8) and the implementation guidelines
