  • Eligible candidates must be in the final writing stage of completing a PhD in a university of the SouthFAQ
  • The proposed thesis must be relevant to international or development studies; particular interest will be given to thesis dealing with Brazil as an international actor as well as South-South cooperation themes (versus North-South cooperation).

Participants are usually working in disciplines such as anthropology, history, law, politics and political science, and economics.

A few seats are available for PhD candidates from the Graduate Institute, Geneva in the final writing stage of their thesis. The application process and benefits are the same. A number of PhD candidates will also be nominated by PUC-Rio

English Proficiency

All applications and accompanying information (including the summary of the thesis project) must be submitted in English. The working language of the workshop is English.

Application Process

Candidates should apply through the online application form (now closed) and submit the following:

- A 2'000 word summary of your PhD project
- A draft chapter of your PhD thesis or an outline of the thesis

Only complete files will be considered for the selection.

Selection Process

Selection will be based on the quality of the applications and the research undertaken to date. Quality being equal, selection may be guided by an interest in promoting thematic coherence at the workshop and regional diversity. Thesis dealing with Brazil as an international actor or themes around South-South cooperation are particularly welcome. Applications of candidates who are not eligible will not be taken into consideration.

Selected participants will be reimbursed their return fares and be provided accommodation during the workshop. The exact conditions will be provided with the confirmation of admission.
