Youth and civic engagement in India : A discussion with Indian student activists

Students from several Indian universities will be invited to Geneva to participate in the Week of Democracy. They will discuss their experiences of civic engagement and analyse the changing practices of local democracy in India. The discussion with the audience will focus on current student activism and political participation on and around the campus.

Challenges of participatory democracy in India

Citizen participation is a key term in recent public debates on policy-making and governance in India. The panel will explore various facets of civic activism and decentralisation. Focussing in particular on the successful Right to Information campaign and on the growing civic engagement in urban planning, panelists will also discuss recent shifts in spaces for participation.

Public Space and Local Democracy in Contemporary Athens

Public participation especially in local decision-making could be an important mechanism to revive democratic principles and ideals at various levels of government. At this public workshop, urban planners from leading architecture schools will present recent innovative projects in the Athenian city centre, focusing on the twin issues of public spaces and democratic participation.

From Ottoman to post-modern. Public spaces as a metaphor of Modern Greek History

Public lecture with Georges Prevelakis, Professor of Geography and Planning at the Sorbonne and Associate Fellow at the Sciences Po Centre of International Research in Paris. A specialist in geopolitics, cultural geography, architecture and urban planning, he served as the Greek Ambassador at the OECD from 2013-2015.

Repenser la démocratie par le bas : les nouvelles voix des pays du Sud

Cette table-ronde permettra de débattre des nouvelles formes d’engagement citoyen, fondées à la fois sur de nouveaux outils de participation démocratique et sur la recomposition de répertoires d’action traditionnels. A partir d’un cadre d’analyse commun, fondé sur le dualisme révélé par les travaux d’Albert Hirschman entre défection et prise de parole, les présentations des intervenants développeront des études de cas sur différents contextes non-européens. Elles seront suivies par un débat et une discussion avec le public.
