BACKGROUND AND MISSION
The International Association for Maternal and Neonatal Health (IAMANEH) was founded in Geneva in 1977. It is an NGO with ECOSOC status , whose purpose is to improve maternal and neonatal health, eradicating poverty and promote gender equality throughout the world. IAMANEH is a federation of more than 30 national associations from all regions, sharing the same purpose. IAMANEH Switzerland is neutral on both political and religious matters and is a member of ZEWO (an independent Swiss foundation that monitors charitable acts): a guarantee of the correct and impartial use of monetary gifts for public action. IAMANEH Switzerland primarily supports projects in countries where women and children’s health is particularly threatened because of, for example, poverty or war. Regions with high mother and child mortality rates are at the centre of their activities. IAMANEH Switzerland’s principal areas of engagement are to be found in Mali, Senegal, Togo, Burkina Faso, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Albania.
AREAS OF INTEREST
- maternal and neonatal health
- perinatal mortality
- prevention and protection against violence
- promotion of health through access to knowledge and information
- sustainable health through education and income
IAMANEH supports many projects in West Africa and the Western Balkans, helping women and children to be more independent and to shape their own future. Projects in West Africa aim at ending violence against women and young girls, provide sex education for young people and increasing access to health services and clean water. IAMANEH also works towards better health for teenage mothers, preventing complications in childbirth due to fistulas and a holistic approach to health by tackling the interaction of poverty and poor health. Projects in the Western Balkans focus on treating traumata due to the war, treating marginalized children and on violence against women, which also includes anti-violence counselling for men.
GOVERNANCE AND STAFF
The association is governed by a 8 member board of Directors chaired by lawyer and social anthropologist, Dagmar Domenig. The management of IAMANEH Switzerland’s team is Magdalena Urrejola.
FUNDING SOURCES AND BUDGET
IAMANEH’s main funding source is the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) (41.9%), followed by donations by foundations and organisations ( 29.1%). The remaining income comes from private donors, cantons and communes and others. Total income in 2016 was CHF 2.8 million.
