Vincent Chetail is the founding Director of the Global Migration Centre and Professor of International Law at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies. He is member of the Directory Board of the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights and, from 2004 to 2012, was Research Director of the Geneva Academy.

Professor Chetail is a leading expert on migration, a field in which he has published 16 books and over 50 articles, book chapters and reports. He has launched and supervised 20 research projects on various topical issues related to migration from both a policy and academic perspective.

He regularly serves as a consultant to governments, NGOs and international organizations. He has for instance actively collaborated with UN agencies on many aspects of migration as well as with the African Union in drafting the Protocol on the free movement of persons (2017) and the Protocol on the right to nationality in Africa (2014).

Professor Chetail is Editor-in-Chief of the Refugee Survey Quarterly (Oxford University Press), General Editor of the book series Theory and Practice of Public International Law (Martinus Nijhoff, Leiden/Boston) and Organisation internationale et relations internationales (Bruylant, Brussels), as well as a member of several editorial boards (including the European Journal of Human Rights and the International Journal of Migration and Border Studies).

He is also senior research associate at the Refugee Law Initiative (University of London) and at the Centre for Refugee and IDP Studies (University of Sarajevo), expert of the Academic Network for Legal Studies on Immigration and Asylum in Europe (Brussels) and of the International Association of Refugee Law Judges (European Chapter), as well as member of several boards, including those of the International Institute of Human Rights (Strasbourg) and of the Organization for Refuge, Asylum & Migration (ORAM).

Vincent Chetail has been visiting scholar at Harvard Law School (Human Rights Programme, 2013) and visiting professor at several universities, such as the Hague Academy of International Law (2016), Queen University of Belfast (2016), the University of Paris XI (2006-2012), the Université libre de Bruxelles (2008-2012), the European University Institute – Florence (2010), the International Institute of Human Rights – Strasbourg (2009-2012), the International Institute of Humanitarian Law – San Remo (2005-2013), the African University of Technology and Management – Benin (2007-2008) and the University of Tunis II (2006-2008).
