Making the case for multilateralism
On 18 July Nirmala Sitharaman, India’s Minister of State for Commerce & Industry reaffirmed India’s commitment to multilateralism during a public lecture at the Graduate Institute.
“For areas of global concern, multilateralism is the only instrument we have for finding the way forward”, said Minister Sitharaman. “We must think long and hard before we decide to abandon this pattern, whether in climate or in trade, as the consequences of any misstep would be far reaching.”
Ms Sitharaman said India remained committed to trade liberalisation, and that multilateralism could be “reclaimed” through strengthening systems, countering protectionism and fostering development.
The event was organised by the Graduate Institute’s Centre for Trade and Economic Integration and the Permanent Mission of India to the WTO, and was chaired by CTEI co-director, Professor Richard Baldwin.
